I've been working with a friend on a 1958 Plymouth 2dr. hard top for three years now, which really has been too long to be away from a boat project. As many of you know I never really finished the pink 56 Meteor (wiring, steering cables, etc.) but soon the car will be done and I can get back to the boats!

The title of this entry, though, is the next project, so I will make a mention of what is being planned. The car is being restored as a "Christine Clone" Just do am image search for "58 Plymouth Christine" if you don't know what I am talking about. The boat will be a match to this.

(Update:  Body and paint nearly done  - just weeks from completion)

1958 Herters Flying Fish were available in two fin sizes. The rarer of the two has fins two feet high! By coincidence they look just like 58 Plymouth fins, so that will be the basis of the project. It will incorporate rear bumpers, tail lights and side trim to match the car and a hardtop from a 1960 Glastron. The idea is the same as the gold and black Herters in my gallery section which matches the DeSoto convertible as done so well by Gary MacNorius, but it should be a better match with regard to the fin shape. The project boat is already up in the Herters gallery section. It is the only Herters there with a roof on it.

The really exciting part is that this will be filmed and put up on the site as 10 minute segments during the restoration! This should be very interesting to watch.

Stay tuned, same boat time, same boat channel!

I am working with a model maker in the "Garage Kit" industry to create a 1/24 scale model of the Lone Star Meteor. If all goes according to plan, there will be a limited production of fifty pieces, some of which will be finished with others avalable as kits for the buyer to complete. I am currently working to take numerous measurements of every aspect of the boat and its every component, a formidable task! The model makers will be submitting various progress photo's which will be added to the site so that you can follow along at home! These will be resin kits / models and will be very detailed and highly collectible. To the best of my knowledge, there has never been a model made of the Meteor in the past so this will be a first. More information as it becomes available!      - KevFin

Mission Statement

I started this site a number of years ago with the assistance of Kelly Wood to showcase my collection as seen in the eBook section. I collected these boats beginning in 1991 because at that time it seemed no one else was doing so. As I began to network with Lee Wangstad, Bryan Fenwick, Del Van Emmerik and others we began to see what truly unique and interesting designs were out there awaiting discovery.

Most of the boats we collect are very rare and were in serious danger of disappearing forever. Wooden boats had a huge following and were supported by many seemingly wealthy people, but the early Fiberglas boats were regarded at the time as about the only thing made in the fifties that wasn't worth anything. It therefore became imperative

“to foster an awareness with the intention of promoting the preservation and restoration of these wonderful craft.

Today, this website has grown tremendously with the able assistance of Bob Whiteside and we are trying to work towards an ever growing ability to reproduce missing parts to reach our goals.

Having some 25 boats in my collection means that I can go out and grab stuff off of them for duplication in order to assist others on their projects. The flip side is that my own boats which are often missing parts as well are much more easily restored due to the many friends I have made on this site and others over the years.

I see a bright future ahead for our hobby and our ever growing network of friends and many of the boats that were recently in danger of being lost to history forever have now been saved. Other rare pieces still being discovered all the time and you can help! If you see something out of the ordinary, please take a minute to consider giving it a home, or share it with our hobby by emailing someone or posting a message on one of the many associated message boards!

These rare and fascinating designs are a treasure to be preserved for future generations. They just don't build 'em like they used to!

“Looks Fintastic”  KevFin

KevFin’s bachelorhood c’est finis.   FinGirl has snagged the big one or KevFin has caught the prize depending on whose idea this all was.   Apparently they are setting a date sometime in 2013.   Whether they plan to start their own school of fish is unknown.   We’ll just have to wait and see on that one.    Owning a jewelry store helps when you’re trying to win a girl’s hand in marriage or other areas of interest.  Rumors of a large mineral deposit causing shifts in the magnetic field of the planet are somewhat exaggerated,  but the phenom has been traced to Rockton Illinois.  The ring must be made of Krytonite.
